It was with shock and disappointment that I read last Saturday’s front page article about the loss of Brantford’s Christian radio station (‘Rock On’—July 10). As a former volunteer host with this station, I found the headline of the article to be somewhat misleading in nature stating ‘Christian radio station to get makeover in deal’. A makeover implies an improvement of some kind. In this instance, that is not the case at all as Brantford is set to LOSE the only Christian radio station within its reach if this deal is approved by the CRTC.
It was only less than a decade ago that Canada’s broadcast regulator started opening doors to Christian radio, within the confines of ‘religious programming’ and with various stipulations in place to ensure adequate balance. There are now roughly 30 Christian radio stations across our nation and our city has been blessed to have one of those, to this point. While the battle to sustain this format financially is certainly ‘uphill’ in nature I for one, believe it is well worth the effort. Christian radio offers hope and inspiration to all while promoting values that benefit our society in a number of ways—not to mention, a platform for many talented artists of this genre—-all within the context of programming that is fit for the whole family.
Given the many challenges of obtaining a radio license for Christian programming in Canada, it seems a real shame that Brantford is about to lose its’ ‘voice of hope’ in our community. I’m confident that another Christian broadcaster would’ve stepped up if given the opportunity to purchase and remain hopeful that, perhaps, there is still a chance this deal may not be approved and I plan to appeal to the CRTC as such. While some may see this change as a makeover, I can’t help but see it as, potentially, a great loss and the addition of a new rock station as simply adding to the noise that is already too prevalent.
